in many war-games, armies will move more quickly while "in reserve" (distant from the enemy front lines), since the troops can shoulder their weapons and hurry without any threat of enemy fire or ambush. 15 seconds of movement at short range only lets you close 5 meters, whereas you could move 50 meters in the same amount of time at long range!

But you can still only move one band per 15 second turn, which means you are actually moving much more slowly the closer to the enemy. Long and very long range bands are 50 meters each, medium range bands (3 bands across 45m) come out to 15 meters each and short range bands are only 5 meters across. If you divide each range category by its component range bands, then you get a different distance for each band at different ranges. If you break down the range categories, then very long range is 250 meters (500m distance to 250m distance), long range is 200 meters (250m distance to 50m distance), medium range is 45 meters (50m distance to 5m distance) and short range is 5 meters (5m distance to 0m). Moreover, the ground scale is kind of funny.

Any clues for ground vehicles in a combat situation?

for one, there is no indication on how to use vehicles, even though ATV's and Air/Raft show up in several sections throughout the book and presumably could be turned into ad hoc armoured fighting vehicles. Something is still bugging me about personal combat. Were they not mentioned in 1977 Traveller? What were the means of communication, according to the original 1977 LBB? I heard someone mention "trade routes" when Googling this question, but I couldn't find that mentioned either in the books (maybe I just need to look again, though). Digging through the rules for trade and commerce-ships and trade are probably the most extensive rules in the game! I was wondering why I didn't see any mention of X-Boats, which I know from MongTrav.
